If you work hard and stay with a company, you expect to get rewarded, right? Instead of raises, many Arizona State University instructors said their paychecks are getting slashed. Many ASU writing teachers taught four courses each semester, and could take on a fifth for more money. Now we’re told they’re expected to teach five classes and the new base rate is below what many of them were making. She said the expectation was to teach four courses, and serve on a committee. In the past Brussin also taught a fifth course to make extra money. But Brussin said that bump in pay, plus her merit raises are going away with her latest contract. ASU said the new base salary is an increase, and that the service component they were expected to participate in has been eliminated. Brussin said students will get less one-on-one time, especially since classroom sizes have increased.
