Many ASU writing teachers taught four courses each semester, and could take on a fifth for more money. Now we’re told they’re expected to teach five classes and the new base rate is below what many of them were making. She said the expectation was to teach four courses, and serve on a committee. In the past Brussin also taught a fifth course to make extra money. But Brussin said that bump in pay, plus her merit raises are going away with her latest contract. ASU said the new base salary is an increase, and that the service component they were expected to participate in has been eliminated. Brussin said students will get less one-on-one time, especially since classroom sizes have increased. She and 31 other teachers sent a letter to their dean asking for more pay to teach that fifth course. As for her future at ASU? ASU sent us a statement saying: Arizona State University is increasing the base pay for instructors across the university in recognition of their hard work and dedication. The university has consistently required that writing instructors carry a percent workload, made up of five equal components — regardless of whether one of those components was teaching a class or performing service duties, such as work for a faculty committee.
