The information Ahlers would have threatened to reveal is that Frank, before he went into hiding, had been a supplier to the German Army. According to Lee, 80 percent of Dutch businesses had some dealings with the German Army during the occupation; their survival depended on it. On his return from Auschwitz, Frank had no money to give Ahlers, but he did write to the Dutch police testifying that Ahlers had saved his life by turning that letter over to him.
